Getting a Blood Draw

Sam's Story

Hello, I am Sam. I am 10 years old. Today, I am going to the clinic to get a blood exam. It is okay to feel a little nervous, but I am brave.

Before going to the clinic, I make sure to eat a good breakfast. Eating helps me feel strong and ready for the day.

At the clinic, I will meet a nurse. The nurse is kind and wants to help me. I can ask the nurse any questions I have.

The nurse will clean my arm with a small cloth. It might feel cold and wet, but it helps keep everything clean.

Next, the nurse will use a tiny needle to take a little bit of blood. I might feel a quick pinch, but it will not last long.

While the nurse takes the blood, I can focus on something else. I can look at a picture on the wall or think about my favorite game.

After the blood is taken, the nurse will put a small bandage on my arm. The bandage helps protect my skin and it looks cool.

If I feel a little dizzy or tired, I can tell the nurse or my parent. They will help me sit down and feel better.

When the blood exam is done, I can be proud of myself for being brave. I did a great job and everyone is proud of me.

After the clinic, I can do something fun. Maybe I will get a special treat or play my favorite game at home. Today was a good day.
